Residential Trash Containers (effective date 6/6/2011)

In order to improve the positive appearance of residential neighbors and to maintain clean and sanitary conditions, the City of Brandon adopted an ordinance on June 6, 2011 to require that, in all residentially zoned districts, each residence must keep garbage cans and trash containers out of public view from any public street or sidewalk.  All cans and containers should be kept in a concealed area except during the designated times of trash collection.  Following trash collection on the same day, please return your cans and containers to their concealed keeping areas.  If you have any questions or would like to discuss this regulation, please call Community Development at (601) 824-4580.

Feeding of Wild Animals and Waterfowl (effective date 12/6/10)

In order to protect the animals and reduce a public health nuisance, the City of Brandon has adopted an ordinance to prohibit feeding bears, coyotes, deer, feral cats, foxes, groundhogs, opossums, raccoons, skunks and waterfowl.  Waterfowl includes ducks, geese, swans, heron, egrets and anyother bird that frequents the water.  This ordinance does not prohibit feeding of songbirds/backyard birds as long as (1) feeding doesn’t create a unreasonable disturbance (2) does not create an accumulation of droppings (3) does not become an attractant for rodents for other wild animals and (4) bird feeders are placed at least five feet about the ground.  To comply with this ordinance, please do not feed, bait or provide access to food to any wild animal or waterfowl in the City except in designated feeding areas on publicly owned property.  Please take care not to leave or store any refuse, garbage, food product, pet food, etc in a manner that would create an attraction to any wild animal or waterfowl.  For more information please click here to read this ordinance.

Multiple Zoning Ordinance Amendments (effective date 12/6/10)

On December 6, 2010 the City adopted an ordinance to amend the zoning regulations to (1) resolve a temporary moratorium enacted in December 2009 that temporarily prevented certain types of businesses from locating in any commercial district; and (2) simply regulations to make them earier to understand and apply.  To read the full text of the amendments click here.

Keeping Regulations for Dog Breeds Known as Pit Bulls (effective 7/20/2010)

The City of Brandon has adopted an ordinance concerning keeping regulations for dog breeds known as Pit Bulls (pure-bred or any amount) as a measure to preserve and protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizenry of the City of Brandon.  The ordinance prohibits keeping Pit Bull breed dogs (including American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or any dog displaying the majority of physical tratis of one of the aforementioned breeds).  However, the ordinance does provide a variance procedure from the prohibition when certain requirements can be met such as an approved pen/enclosure and insurance.  For more information please click here to read this ordinance.

Smokefree Brandon (effective date 5/4/2010)

The City of Brandon Smokefree Ordinance Phase 2010 became effective on May 4, 2010.  The City has enacted this ordinance to regulate smoking in certain public places including all restaurants and bars, hotels and motels and all retail businesses.  In addition to eliminating scondhand smoke indoors, Brandon’s ordinance prohibits smoking outdoors within a distance of 15 feet outside any establishment where smoking is prohibited.  These smokefree air laws are designed to protect the public health and welfare of the community from health hazards induced by breathing secondhand smoke.  The health hazards include lung cancer, heart disease and respiratory infections.  To learn more about Smokefree Brandon Phase 2010 Click Here.

 

Construction Codes Ordinance (effective date 7/1/2008)

On July 1, 2008 the City adopted the 2006 edition of the various international building codes (with local amendments) and the 2008 edition of the national electrical code.  These codes are the minimum requirements to ensure all structues are built safely by addressing the design, installation, testing and materials related to building construction.  To read the full text of the ordinance please click here.

 

Parking on Unpaved Surfaces (effective date 5/1/2008)

On April 1, 2008 the City adopted an ordinance to prohibit vehicle parking or vehicle storage on any surface other than paved surfaces in any residential subdivision or in any commercially zoned area.  Please note, parking in the grass is prohobited in all areas and districts throughout the City.  A paved surface means a hard-surfaced area designed and constructed specifically for use by motorized vehicles as a path for the vehicle to be driven across, parked or stored.  Driveways and parking surfaces must be a minimum width that is wide enough for a standard passenger car.  Paving material must consist of concrete, asphalt, paving bricks or similar hard-surface/solid material.  For expansion of an existing driveway or parking area in a residential subdivision or a commercially zoned area, the new paving material must be equal to or better than the existing surface.  Also, in a residential subdivsion, the paved surfaces can not exceed an area greater than 35% of the front yard.  For help determining your front yard area, please call Community Development.  Parking surfaces consisting of non-compliant materials such as gravel or slag, which were installed prior to the adopting of this ordinance on 4/1/08 are allowed to be continued but may not be added to or extended.

Parking is permitted on a paved parking area, in a garage or in a carport.  Parking on a patio or other hard surface not connected to the driveway or street is prohibited.  You may not park a vehicle on the grass or in any area intended for landscaping.  This includes the front yard, side yard, rear yard and teh grass area between the street and sidewalk.  Parking a motor vehicle on the paved portion of any public street, road or thouroughfare overnight, or at any other time where such parking is determined to be a hazard or traffic obstruction, is illegal.  Occasional street parking for guests is allowed unless such parking creates a hazard or traffic obstruction.
